End of 2013, a little over a year ago, I published an article on the Huffpost entitled “24 Clear Signs You’re a Mom”. The objectives at the time were to 1. Drive awareness and traffic for WeMothers, the online community I had at the time (it did) and 2. Test my ability to engage and connect with moms through insights.
Shortly after its publication on the US site the entry was translated into Spanish and posted on the Spanish Huffpost site.
I knew from my experience in social media, especially Facebook and the WeMothers platform, that those insights were relevant for moms, but was still surprised by how well these insights resonated with moms.
Within 3 or 4 days it reached over 5 million readers, was “Liked” over 500,000 times and “Shared” over 100,000 times. For a couple of days it also trended as one of the most popular entries. All, within the few days. I’ve written more about it here.
So I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I received an email from the German Huffpost team informing me that they’ve translated that list of insights into German and posted it on their site.
It’s validating to see that the German editorial team of the HuffPost thinks that those insights will also be relevant in Germany (or they are desperate for content).
A few learning I take out of this ongoing experience:
1. Many of these insights seem to resonate with moms across geographies and cultures. They seem universal.
2. You don’t need to be a mom to understand moms and connect with them. All you need is a bit of empathy and good listening skills. Actually, it is more than just listening. It’s about hearing them.
3. It’s fun to have an article be so well received and travel around the world.
